Without wishing to be more than ordinarily awkward, I feel constrained to point out that Professor Hill is, of course, writing from a position of privilege. A position very different from that of the ordinary Black American who, no matter how law-abiding, must go in a fear of the police that no white person need feel. Who must be aware of every action, as the consequences of even the slightest misunderstanding with a white person can be deadly.
It is also beyond arrogant to demand that "one should take advantage of the opportunites that the United States offers". These so-called opportunities are offered to few. A quick search does not tell me what his background in Jamaica was, which tells me it was at least moderately privileged - high achievers from poor origins are prone to broadcast them far and wide. Advanced, predatory capitalism is based upon the denial of opportunity.
All in all, it strikes me that Professor Hill is at best a privileged individual, isolated from and ignorant of the issues faced by ordinary Black Americans. At worst, he's just another Uncle Tom.
Either way, he's not helping anyone except himself.
