Which is understandable. But consider that when you call something evil, you bring in a whole set of connotations around Nazis, Communists and other groups that have been otherised by that term.. What you then get in reaction is denail rather than acceptance "I'm not evil! I go to Church!" etc. and so forth. But what you want is acceptance, the notion that America was founded by men who did brutal and unacceptable things, and passed their inhumane attitudes down in the structure of the society they created, then you can legitimately challenge modern white Americans to prove themselves better people by changing things. You need understanding and communication, not more conflict. If you make it easy to say, "OK, so Jefferson was a paedophile and Franklin was a hypocrite. Nothing to do with me!", then you get nowhere. If you say "Do you want to continue living by rules made by people who did thus and such?", you stand a better chance.
