What it actually is is Space Opera, like E E 'Doc' Smith and his Lensmen, or Warhammer 40K. Lots of Sturm und Drang, not much plot! What plot there is, straight as an arrow and obvious as a brick through a plate glass window! Who the Devil uses melee weapons when hand-held ranged ones are freely available, except in Space Opera!
