Well, OK, we're British and thus substantially better educated, more literate and more capable of critical thinking than the average American - otherwise Nigel Farage would be Prime Minister - and that does rub off on the sprogs, I'll grant you.
But all three of my grandkids - including the autistic one - are in agreement on this. C S Lewis, Enid Blyton and Tolkien (in The Hobbit at least) give the impression that they are 'talking down' to the reader, and they don't like it. We never talked down to out kids, and we and they never talk down to the grandchildren. They aren't used to the didactic tone and the assumption that they can't figure things out for themselves. That's all.
I can only speak about the kids I know. My eldest Grandchild is 12, but as I said, she's autistic and I don't think she's ever given a moments' thought to her sexuality!
