Well, my father-in-law was a Union negotiator, and his two-by-four was a slightly different kind of strike action.

As to violent confrontation as an option, it depends on the situation. Where violence is a possibility, then visible preparedness to respond in kind is often a disincentive to the potential aggressor.

On the other hand, there are those for whom violence is their modus operandi, and who will invite you to a debate with the sole intention of cracking your head. At that point, the ability to retaliate in kind is essential.

I know it flies in the face of received wisdom, but the proven historical facts are that might makes right. Or rather that if one side refuses to use force, and the other side doesn't, then the one who uses force will win.
