We saw it over here in the UK. There were three dominant reactions:

"Those poor people!" (pretty much everyone)

"Serves the cocky bastards right!" (people who had lived through WW2)

"Maybe now they know how it feels, they'll finally stop buying guns and bombs for the IRA!" (Anyone over 20 at the time)
