We are driven, and remain driven, by the 'rules' hard-wired into us by our evolution as troop-living primates. Thus empathy, morality, community are necessary to maintain the troop. Meanwhile, aggressiveness, territoriality, violence and cruelty are there to be applied to the Others. Those not of our troop who may encroach on our range or who, because of our troops' growth, must be removed to give us the space we need. Almost all human motivations and behaviours can be traced back to this brutal, but at the time necessary, dichotomy.
Meaning is for the over-clever with time on their hands to think about. Most 'ordinary' people find meaning in getting through the day, supporting theiir families, whether or not City or United get promoted or relegated and what's happening to the residents of Coronation Street.
Religious observance, once compulsory, is now n many places simply a lifestyle choice, consumed like every other commodity, with the consumer taking what they wish from it. Nobody who had any real work to do ever took any meaning from it!
Sorry, but I'm not a clever chap like you two! Just a Bear of Very Little Brain, reporting what he sees, hears and experiences!
