Unfortunately, the idea of a society working to protect and support its' members is also inimical to the American psyche. Americans are supposed to be self-reliant individualists who neither require nor will accept help. Offer support and help to a male American teen and he will either hate you for considering him weak, or his father, uncles and male peers will weigh in and accuse you of making him soft.
