Unfortunately, pragmatism does leave a sour taste, doesn't it? But we do have to consider the possibility that there is no 'why' in the sense of there bieng a 'purpose' or 'reason'. There is undoubtedly a 'cause' but a cause isn't necessarily a reason and we need to keep the two ideas separate for now.
Science is looking for causes, not reasons, as that is the task they have set themselves. Philosophers and metaphysicians are looking for reasons, but tend to conflate reason and cause.
