Um, your average Neanderthal was a tough cookie, as far as we can tell ffrom their bones. They would've been smart enough to make sophisticated textiles, but wouldn't have bothered because they didn't need to.

But they were exceptional toolmakers, which is why I've often thought that they're at the root of the mythical Dwarfs.
