Unlike SF, Space Opera doesn't have to pay attention to the science as long as things look good. Check out stuff like EE Smiths 'Lensman' series or Harry Harrisons' 'Stainless Steel Rat' books, or even Warhammer 40K. None of it makes sense, it's not supposed to.
