Two rules for a leader.

The first and most obvious is that the best leader is the one who doesn't want to be in control. Because then they will do only what they must.

The second is, as Machiavelli recommends, to assume that everyone is bad to the bone, and that left to their own devices, will do nothing but harm to themselves or others.

If a politician works for those who elected them, and only those who elected them, then you get a Trump., or a Boris Johnson. An elected leader should work for everyone, whether they voted for them or not,

Let's face it, here in the UK, if democracy meant doing what the majority of your voters want, every time, we'd still be hanging people!
