Two defendants, one trial, one conference.

Jesus of Nazareth, itinerant Essene preacher from Galilee, was brought by his friend Judas to a secret meeting at night in the Temple.. They questioned him about his beliefs, his teachings, and that unseemly brawl in the Temple. He hadn't broken any of the Law - even the Sabbath was not so sacred that you couldn't save a life on it - but he had different interpretations of it which some to the Pharisees agreed with. The Sadducees were more concerned about his effect on public order. They told him to go to his lodgings and celebrate Passover (a day or so early because he used the Essene Calendar), and they would send him a message in a public park (as all good spies do). The message was brought by Judas - who was the go-between - it was a gift of thirty talents of silver and a warniing to get out of town while everone else was busy with Passover and before the Romans noticed him. Jesus, his wife Mary, and their kids left Jerusalem the next day, quietly, and went to either Aexandria or Massilis (modern Marseilles) where they lived out their lives.

Jesus Barabbas, Judaean noble, descendant of David, revolutionary guerilla leader, was captured by the Romans, tried before Pliate, and crucified. A wealthy sympathiser claimed the body and put it in a tomb he owned overnight. In the morning, when people turned up to embalm the body, they found iit gone. The Romans may have taken it to burn it, so as not to have a tomb or relics to serve as rallying point for more guerillas. Or it may have been taken by grave-robbers to be sold for dissection. It could even have been Jesus' own fsmily reclaiming their wayward son. Even Zealots, who wanted their leaders' tomb to be known only to them!

So a long time later, a Hellenised Jew called Saul is hired to investigate some local cults for sedition. He finds some grandfathers' tales whihc conflate the two Jesus inot one character. He finds some manuscripts supposedly detailing the teachings and life of a prophet called Jesus. He packs up hid job, goes to Damascus, rewrites or edits the manuscripts into something more or less coherent. He adds the resurrection bit, turning a Jewish prophet into a Mediterranean Vegetation Hero, packages the whole thing as a new Mystery Cult and proceds to make a small fortune out of it!

That's another version!
