If you use your fists, the criminals will use clubs.

If you use a club, the criminals will use knives.

If you use a knife, the criminals will use pistols.

If you use a pistol, the criminals will use shotguns.

And so on. By enacting strict gun control legislation, we hold gun crime down over here. Guns are expensive and difficult to come by, and the criminals know that householders don't have them, so most don't waste time and effort trying to get hold of them - they don't need them.
