Trump is the ultimate expression of a dominant strain in American culture: the cult of the individual. Self-reliant, self-made, utterly opposed to the idea of collective action, collective responsibility or the common weal. The fact that he's also a fake deepens the irony.
But this thinking only deepens the divide. People believe that it is their responsibility to work hard and get rich. Then they work hard and stay poor. But your culture doesn't permit them to recognise that the solution is to band together and change the system, which is what the British working classes did with Trade Unions and the Labour Party. Instead they thrash around looking for someone to blame, and are guided to attack those minorities who have seen the need for collective action.
The bosses can 'E Puribus Unum' all they like, but their real motto has always been "Divide et Impera".
