This is really just one more of those 'civilized mind games and distractions'. You don't have time to meditate on anything without assured physical omfort and safety.

Our ancient ancestors lived in the constant presence of death. Starvation was a hard winter or a poor hunt away. Any but the most minor injury would lead to infections, sepsis and death. Most illnesses the same. Predators predated. Hostile tribes attacked. So they ate when there was food, made love when the mood was on them, spent time with each other. Most importantly, they worked together to delay their deaths as long as they could. They survived, survived well enough to advance.

We have lost that immediacy, that urgency, so now we contempate our navels.
