This is grim reading, but I do wonder if this is a case less of racism than of moral cowardice?

Consider, Will Smith resigned from the Academy of his own free will, before his ban from functions. Therefore, it is 'safe' for the Academy to act against him.

To have acted against Bill Cosby any earlier could have led to accusations of racism.

To act against Weinstein could have had financial consequences.

I very much doubt that Roman Polanski gave a shit about what the Academy said or did anyway.

John Wayne? As in American national treasure John Wayne? Kick The Duke out of the Academy for getting pissed off with some Redskin? Never happen! Not then, probably not now.

As to Brody and Carrey, while the film industry may be wavering in its' racism, its' sexism is still intact!

AMPAS does not wish to set itself up as a political entity, so leaves such matters to other agencies. It can then take action ex-post-facto without having to take responsibility.

While the underlying structure of a society remains systemically racist, then the parasites that grow on the structure and absorb their nutrients from it will continue to mimic it in order to survive. A parasite which becomes irritating is invariably removed.
