This I understand. Though only a fanfic writer - if you look at the couple of original pieces I have on here, you'll see why -I'm fully sympathetic to what you say.

When I began writing my crossover stories, I combined the Potterverse and the Marvelverse. Not because either was my favourite - far from it. But the former is so poorly-defined that you can put anything in it, and the latter so sprawling and frequently retconned that there is little or no actual canon to disrupt. That was the basis for my 'Unified Storyverse' , which has LOTR as the far past, Star Trek as the near future and WH40K as the very far future. A Universe in which Dumbledore was a HYDRA operative, Draco Malfoy grew up to be an agent of SHIELD and Minerva McGonagalls' first crush was the Tenth Doctor and her first lover was Simon Templar.

If you start with something you love too much, you never have the nerve to play with it!
