There's always been contraception, or attempts at it, around. Some folk think that Cro-Magnon women used acorn husks as cervical contraceptives. The Ancient Egyptians sometimes used crocodile egg shells as condoms, and fabrics of one sort or another (muslin, linen, silk) have been used for centuries by those who could afford them. There have also been all kinds of douches and herbal 'remedies' used to counteract the effects of intercourse ex post facto.
