There are still people here in the UK who won't buy a Snickers bar! It was originally marketed here as a 'Marathon' bar, because the original name sounded too much like 'knickers' ('panties' to you Colonials), and because 'snickering' was what schoolboys did when discussing knickers, bottoms, belly-buttons and so forth (those were innocent times).

When the name was standardised in 1990, a lot of people over here were upset. Snickers still sounds like knickers, after all, plus there are still people here who object to the creeping Americanisation of culture worldwide.
