There are other factors as well. There is an amusing (if slightly contemptible) tendency among English people who claim Irish descent to give their kids Celtic names. Thus, a couple I knew, both sixth or seventh generation 'immigrants' and no more Irish than I, both with standard English names, called their son Liam and their daughter Caitlin., then wondered why kids with those names whose parents were actually Irish called them 'plastic paddies'!
