There are no perfect answers, I'll grant you. Absent changes in attitude -which are proceeding, but slowly - any system designed to benefit everyone will always find itself marginalising some people, at least at first.

While there is every reason to hope and believe that sexual orientation and gender identity will eventually cease to be something which people fuss unduly over, some things will never change. The young male will always be aggressive, competitive, hierarchical and oversexed. It's hard-wired into the DNA. It is in their and everyone elses' best interests to separate them out until they can be trained in proper behaviour.

Also, and to be absolutely honest, I have to say that whilst homosexuality and transgenderism are clearly natural states into which people are born, other such 'orientations' are more open to doubt. From my own personal experience, I am aware that both bisexuality and asexuality can be matters of conscious choice. Having grown up listening to David Bowie and others of that ilk, I harbour a distinct, and cynical, suspicion that androgyny, non-binarism and gender-fluidity are less natural states than lifestyle choices and/or attention-grabbers for minor celebrities. So I'm adopting a 'wait and see' policy on those!
