The "Where are you from?" question is one that is a frequent bone of contention. I get it a lot because even after forty-odd years in the Midlands my accent is stiil redolent of Gods' Own County.

I recall once asking a new colleague where she cam from. She rolled her eyes as she curtly responded "Bangladesh!" I replied "Really? With that accent, I'd have said Solihull!" She had the grace to laugh.

People seem to forget that, upon arrival in the UK, most immigrants settled in urban areas because that was where the housing and jobs were. Holidays were extended and much saved-up-for trips back to India or Pakistan (often with the ulterior motive of finding spouses for grown-up children), or the Hajj.

The nearest many came to the countryside was the local park. I've often noticed minority people at the seaside -dressed up to the nines, wandering along the sea-front at Weston or Scarborough, looking as if they've been caught a glancing blow at the base of the skull with three feet of lead pipe! A distinct air of "WTF?" about them.

Some people from ethnic minorities have made a go of country living. The Hairy Bikers, in their indefatigable search for local artisan produce upon which to commit fine dining, often find people and families from different backgrounds growing or making various foods in English villages or farms. Asian, Vietnamese, Malay, Norwegian and so on.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how many people from these communities might view the idea of camping -one of the best and cheapest means of getting into the countryside. The same applies to caravans. Even holiday villages offering chalets and static caravans seem to get mostly white customers.

Might one dare to suggest that this kind of holiday is simply not to their taste? Or isn't anyone allowed to have likes and dislikes anymore?
