The original trilogy stands alone and should have been left alone. Prequels, sequels and spinoffs add nothing to the achievement, and even take away from it!

It is the time gaps that are fatal. Sixteen years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace. Ten years between Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens. Each gap a full generation.

Audience sensibilities change. Society changes. Expectations, requirements, uses and gratifications morph. Each trilogy is a product of its generation and that generations zeitgeist. Differences in mood and tone that may be subtle, but which make a clear disconnect between each trilogy. How could the dark and complex worlds of the prequels and the moral ambiguity of the sequels ever relate to the clear-cut good guys and bad guys ethic of the original?
