The Heros' Journey, the Star-Crossed Lovers, the Usurper and various others are, of course, 'tales as old as Time', and will always turn up.

That said, the commerical caution of large corporations does lead to rigidity of formula and repetion, right up to the point that people get bored and they have to try something else.

The current problem is that, due to other things happening in the world, too many people are now so lacking in basic critical thinking skills and imagination that they don't get bored anymore!
