The funny thing about the British class system is that the mutual contempt is two-way.

The upper class despise the middle-class as money-grubbers of no taste and culture, and the working class as unwashed and lazy.

The middle-class despise the upper class as amoral and extravagant and the working class as immoral and vulgar.

The working class despise the middle-class because they're prudish and they've never done 'proper' (ie manual) work and the upper-class because they're brainless, chinless and live off the backs of the workers.

But it's all right because at least we all hate the French, apparently!
