The first film suffered, as any such efforts do, from the absence of a key character: Intellect or Reason, who should start as a small, undeveloped blob the others ignore, but who grows with every lesson learned until they assume a leading role.

I was annoyed when the views inside the adults' heads still showed emotions fully in charge. It gives a wrong impression, not only of how people work, but of how they should work.

I blame Star Trek.
