The first, ad oml;y, description we get of Aragorn is when Frodo first meets him at Bree. He's described as having 'shaggy black hair flecked with grey" and "a pale stern face with piercing grey eyes". But he's dressed in 'shabby, weather-stained ' clothes. He's also less than polite to Frogo and crew! Basically by 'look fairer and feel fouler', Frodo meant that an agent of Sauron might seem more respectable - better-dressed and with courtly manners -rather than scruffy and brusque. But Strider, like Mr Wolf, thinks fast and talks fast and if he seems curt, it's because time is an issue.
