The film is neither here nor there. It's a slight little cult film that nine out of ten folk have never even heard of. But like any other text, you can read it any way you choose. It's not your reading I object to, it's as valid as any other, but is the subject worth your while?
Sexism is real, and harmful, but you won't solve it by grumbing about cult films. If you want to criticise sexism in cinema, then go for the blockbusters and classics that everyone knows. Is there sexism in Star Wars? I think so. Homophobia in Harry Potter? Quite possibly. Toxic masculinity all over the MCU? Damn straight! Difference being, everybody knows about these films and millions see them and take their cues from the character's behaviours. Write about them - I would, but I lack the skills, or rather have them in other areas.
