The biggest issue, to my mind, is so-called 'Reality TV'. On the one hand, you have stuff like Antiques Roadshow, or The Repair Shop, where ordinary folk bring their trinkets and possessions, either to find out about them, or to have them restored, and the viewer gets to hear the stories, to find out alongside them or marvel at the skills of the restorers. Yes, we know a bit of clever editing goes on, and we know why, but it's all right.
But then you have things like Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly in which a master trainer turns up to deal with assorted problematic pooches. This, as far as I am concerned, is distinctly dodgy. For one thing, we see these deranged animals being changed into perfect pets in a matter of hours, when common sense dictates that it takes weeks if not months of constant training to eradicate these ingrained behaviours.
Then there are the 'Bodycam Shows', as I call them. Police Interceptors, Ambulance, Saving Lives at Sea, and so forth. Kudos to all for at least trying to portray the situations faced by the emergency services. But showing them cheerfully coping with all the crap does lull the audience into forgetting how hard-pressed, underfunded and generally up against it these organisations are. Except the RNLI, whichc is a charity employing volunteers, and which seemson the whole to be better-equipped and havehigher morale than the professional organisations do!
As for the scripted crap like the assorted Real Houswives of ...., Love Island, TOWIE and so on. Utter manure!
