The barabrians sweep away to corrupt civilisation and set up their own rule. They become civilised, corrupt, liberal and tolerant before being swept away by the next set of barbarians. So the cycle goes. If we had retained the rigid morality, class structure, discipline and forward-looking attitude of the Victorians, but still made the economic and technological advances we have, we would not now be descending into chaos.
