The answer is what it has always been. If the mass of people, the non-clever, unambitious, unintellectual passengers on the Clapham Omnibus, have enough to eat, comfortable homes, safety and security in their lives with room for simple indulgences, then they are content. Render them poor, insecure and afraid, and they will be prime targets of the irrational ideologies and the demagogues who peddle them.

But this requires the establishment of a Social Democracy, where trickle-down and wealth creation are recognised as the myths they are and where government recognises its role as maintainer of the wellbeing of all citizens, not special interest groups.
