That about covers it! From the start of the 17th Century, Britain began to gain more and more power, influence and reputation across the world. We already had a reputation for winning 'David and Goliath' battles like Azincourt against larger armies. Then, as a maritime nation (some say THE maritime nation) we developed what was for centuries the most powerful and feared navy in the world (as well as some of the most dreaded pirates).

All this led to a massively expensive empire which enriched a few while making life miserable for everyone else (including British people). Then our arrogant politicians dragged is into three drawn-out and unnecessary comflicts - the Napoleonic Wars and the two so-called World Wars. Each one ruinous to our economy and costly in lives.

After all this crap, they then dragged us into the Common Market/EEC. The upshot of this was that all the fair and profitable trade relationships we'd had with Commonwealth countries had to be abandoned and everything got more expensive to support French farmers and German industrialists. On top of which, they started to erode our sovereignty with a blizzard of directives and regulations which overrode our own Parliaments' laws. At the ame time, our politicians were still acting as if we were a Great Power and tangling us up in all kinds of expensive and silly international affairs.

We are old, tired, broken and fed up. Brexit, the lacksadaisical support among the public for Ukraine and the utter indifference to what is going on in the Middle East, plus the astounding result of the last General Election, all point to a demand for our politicians to quit mucking around with the rest of the world and sort things out at home!

I'm hearing a lot more people saying about foreign affairs "Not our circus, not our monkeys". That kind of sums it up for a lot of people!
