Surely it's down to good manners and consideration for others? We all know (or should know) that the word is hurtful. That alone should be sufficient reason not to use it.

Here in the UK, it was never used much and its' near-equivalent 'coon' has all but vanished. The term 'wog', however has continued in use, referring to those of Indian or Pakistani descent in the main. Quite often it is used by younger people in that community to refer to older, very traditional people or newer immigrants who won't speak English in the home and insist on traditional dress and customs.

I don't use it, because it does upset some people coming from a white person.

I do still refer to the French as 'frogs', however. Mainly because, as a culture, they are way too full of themselves!
