Reputational risk. Back when the Catholic priest in Europe was ministering to a flock who were mostly still pagans at heart, he'd have a girlfriend, probably near his own age, and nobody would mind. The Lord of the Manor would also have a mistress or two, so he'd say nothing. If you were gay, there'd be a convent or monastery that would take you in so you could hang out with other people like you. Everybody was happy.
The Reformation, however, changed that. Suddenly it was no longer possible to mutter some nonsense and get absolution. Suddenly, you had to actually live up to your supposed standards. So suddenly, the Roman Church was under they eyes of a rival who would not hesitate to point out any lapses and cry hypocrisy.
So now, instead of relying on people turning a blind eye, you had to keep your vices secret. And becuase a stright priest who wanted to get married could become a Protestant and do so legitimately, the vices being concealed were now often or a more sinister kind. The same applied to Protestant clergy, of course. With a more educated general public becoming less tolerant of immoral behaviour, the churches took to closing ranks and suppressing the truth. A public purge, they felt, would play into the hands of their rivals, jusr as centuries earlier their financial misdemeanours had lost them more members than any doctrinal shortcomings.
So now they are trying to call 'isolated case' on what is clearly endemic and widespread corruption, in the hope of preserving their already rapidly declining reputation and influence.
Pedophilia is a foot fetish. Thec desire to commit sexual acts with children is paedophilia. Just saying.
