“They got into the garden again!” Bix told Nuc as soon as she arrived. “Crafty little buggers, I’ll give them that! But I thought you might want to see them before I deal with it. I know they’re sort of a hobby of yours.”

Bix was good like that, Nuc reflected. Most people would just have cleared up the infestation, and she wouldn’t have found out until they grumbled about it later. But Bix always knew what his friends were interested in and if he found or saw anything, he always let them know.

“Probably won’t see anything new.” She allowed. “But you never know. We know so little about them, after all!”

“More than we know about other non-sentients.” Bix pointed out. “But that’s only because they’re the only ones that make a nuisance of themselves!”

It was true. The little creatures had only emerged from the stiff grass a few Cycles ago. They scurried about at a tremendous rate, building odd little nests and structures. They multiplied ferociously fast, preyed on other tiny non-sentients and everywhere they went they spread odd, square patches of some kind of mould, which after a while they would gather and take to one of their structures. Some people thought that there were much larger swarms living in the stiff grass and theorised that the ones who came into their gardens did so…
