Only just found this article.

First off, you have to differentiate between 'films' and 'movies'. Films are about authentic voices, important narratives, making people think, etc. Movies are about brains-in-neutral, popcorn and fizzy drink-fuelled entertainment. So when it comes to movies, people want to see funny things, romances, car chases, explosions, spaceships, gunfights et. etc. Big studios will finance fewer films because historically, they have a small audience and limited profits, but do garner prestige, critical acclaim and awards. It's the big blockbusters that used to finance the serious film-making. The current money-at-all-costs mindset is undermining that balance as people spend less and stream more.

Some remakes are, or were, desperately needed. LOTR, for instance, after Bakshis' well-intentioned but half-baked 1978 effort. Dune even more so after Lynch mauled it in 1984. But the live-action Disney remakes were grossly unnecessary. So were the pathetic reboot of The Avengers in 1998 with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman as Mr Steed and Mrs Peel, Val Kilmers ludicrous 1997 turn as The Saint and the idiotic 2015 effort at The Man From UNCLE.

Don't get me started on bloody Star Trek!
