One thing nobody here seems to notice much is history. The world is in chaos - it's always been in chaos, nothing new there. The gulf between rational thought and blind faith has always been there, the only difference now is that Dawkins can say what he thinks publicly without being burned at the stake.

The 'search for meaning and values' that modern people are supposed to be obsessed with is a desperate invention of churches who see their political power going down the plughole in societies where people have achieved a standard of living higher than mere subsistence. Unlike the MiddleEast, where near-universal poverty and starvation allow religion to maintain its grip on people who have nothing to hope for in this life, so can be swayed by the promise of a post-mortem Utopia.

It's not about religion vs science, but about religion vs economics. Once people have enough to be happy in this life, they stop caring about an afterlife they no longer need. They're pretty much in Paradise now, so the promise of it after death is irrelevant -especially if it means adhering to inconveniently restrictive codes of behaviour while alive.

As to science, it is simply a methodology, a toolkit for finding out about things. Sooner or later, it is likely to find explanations for phenomena currently deemed 'spiritual' or 'supernatural'. It is already scientifically established that large parts of the Universe are 'immaterial' in the common sense of 'matter', and that matter itself is ultimately constructed of tiny packets of energy.
