OK, so I'm going to have to disagree with almost everyone!

Batman is not supposed to be campy or gothic. That rules out anything before Batman Begins. Batman is very much in the film noir, hard-boiled detective, Raymond Chandler tradition. The Batman is Philip Marlowe in a cape. This Christian Bale managed to pull off. So, to an extent did Ben Affleck, but his veteran Batman, closer to Millers' Dark Knight, should really have been played by Clint Eastwood.

The other Batman films were all monumentally miscast. Keatons' barking mad Wayne and immobile Batman were alike in their ludicrousness. Val Kilmer and George Clooney are both as wooden as one can be without attracting termites. The man who should have played a sane Penguin portrayed a thuggish Joker. The man who should have played Bane was cast as Mr Freeze. The Riddler was Ace Ventura in a green suit and the actor who could have played Two-Face admirably was constrained by a script that made the character laughable. What an infernal mess!

As to The Batman, I've not seen it. But from what I have heard and read it sounds as if it might have been better if it had been re-written (but not re-cast) as a serious remake of The Shadow.
