Ok, number one, nobody who has talent ever believes they do, no matter how often they've been told, and by whom.

Number two, as my small Clerihew demonstrates, any idiot can produce 'poetry' that rhymes and has rhythm and that talks about action. It's called doggerel and there's scads of it about.

What makes a poet a poet is the resonance their words have for a particular group, or at a particular time and place. Poetry is specific, not general. If it means nothing to you, it isn't meant for you. The verse you wrote as an adolescent has no meaning nor value to the adult you have become and this is how it should be. There may well be poetry out there that resonates with you but which other folk regard as pointless drivel. That does not make the one objectively good or the other objectively bad.

That's the error of criticism in poetry and music - the merit of the work is only the opinion of the consumer, totally subjective. In art, one can recognise poor draughtsmanship, in prose literature, poor grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Those are objective things. But music and poetry are wholly subjective, both in production and consumption. If you don't get it, you don't get it and it is neither becoming nor clever to be snarky about it, no matter how high an opinion you have of yourself!
