Not to be grumpy about it, but:
Almost every hero -historical or fictional - in American 'culture' is famous for waving a gun around. A veritable battalion of gunfighters, gangsters, bank robbers, hardcore Marines and badass cops.
One need only watch 'Hawaii Five-O' or 'SWAT' to know that every crime can be solved by a hail of bullets. Indeed, the implication is that this is the ONLY way to resolve a crime.
Thus, the view is that owning and using a gun is a legitimate way of resolving any and all problems, from bullying at school to a failing marriage.
Without a determined effort to address this deep-seated misapprehension, you won't persuade Americans to put their weapons down.
In another matter, deploring suicide, and trying to prevent it, does amount to a violation of an individuals' rights. It is a hangover from the obsolete Biblical morality and should be placed on the same bonfire as sexism, racism and homophobia.
