Not so. The original 'Mothering Sunday' was a festival in the English Church. One Sunday a year when young people (some as young as 10 or 12), who had been 'put out' to learn a trade elsewhere were expected to return to their 'mother church', where they had been baptised, for a special service. It was also a rare chance to visit family, and it was from this part that the modern 'Mothers' Day' emerged.
