Logic does not provide knowledge, it is simply a means of organising our perceptions. Things which were logical a few centuries ago, such as maggots being spontaneously generated in rotting meat, are now considered illogical because we now know about the life-cycle of flies. But logic did not provide the knowledge, observation did.

Logic allows statements such as "You must reject the statement I am now making, as all the statements I make are false!" Which has nothing to do with reality.

The drives for survival and reproduction arise from the chemical structure of DNA, which by its' nature reproduces itself. It is the fundamental anomaly which gives rise to the greater anomaly of life. Like everything else, it is the result of quantum fluctuations.

There is the Universe - amoral, uncaring, inhuman. A process, a series of events beginning, and ultimately ending, at the quantum level. It is immense, has unlmited possibilities and is utterly unawareof us, itself or anything else.

Then there is what we perceive, and impose patterns on. Patterns delimited by the capability of our senses and the flexibility of our languages. This constitutes less than a milllionth of one per cent of the whole, and there is no guarantee that the patterns and systems we have created could even begin to encapsulate any more. There is a lot we don't yet know, and infiitely more than we ever will. Most of what we know we understand at best superficially, with no guarantee that what we do understand even approximates the reality.

Is there a cause, or isn't there? What does 'cause' even mean in terms of the Universe? We know what it means in human terms because we invented it. But the notion of what causes an observed effect changes from generation to generation. Better to accept that we will never know, and that it doesn't matter that we don't. Then get on with doing what we can to improve ourselves and the world, simply because we can!
