Let the worms wriggle!
Reeve played Superman as the superhero identity of Clark Kent. A big, easy-going, nice but slightly dim farm boy from Kansas, brought up to believe in the flag, apple pie and the fourth of July.
Henry Cavill plays him as Kal-El, a Kryptonian refugee with immense powers and problems about how, when and where to use them.
I had problems with the character of Superman but couldn't bring them into focus until I came across Moores' Marvelman/Miracleman stories.
Bale is an excellent young Batman, but Afflecks' more strategic take on the Dark Knight is more in line with my perception of the character.
Tom Baker? Worst. Doctor. Ever. His overlong seven-year run and the abuse of power and self-indulgence it allowed him were the primary reasons for the shows' subsequent 'managed decline'.
As to Young Master Smith - too young, too nice, too sexualised. I prefer my Doctor without romance! The best Doctors have been at least 50, testy, impatient with those less intelligent (ie everybody) and occasionally, surprisingly, nasty and ruthless. Eccleston scores on several of these but was still a bit too young. I understand the reasoning for a female Doctor, but would have preferred Brenda Blethyn or Jo Martin. Again, for a Black Doctor, Idris Elba or Sir Lenny Henry - Ncuti Gawa is too young.
