Leaving aside the obvious - but frequently ignored - fact that anyone under thirty who claims to be sure of their identity is talking out of their arse (actually, anyone under thirty is pretty much talking out of their arse all the time), what worries me is that childhood has been taken out of the equation.

When I was a kid, boys were boys and girls were girls and they were supposed to wear different clothes and play different games with different toys. But I don't know of a girl who didn't sometimes play with cars or soldiers, or grab a toy gun and join in with a game of "Jerries and Englishes" (this was in the UK in the 1960s, remember). Equally, every boy at some time played with dolls, or played 'house'. Every so often, you'd find a girl who preferred to wear trousers, ride a racing bike or Chopper and generally hang out with the lads -we called them 'tomboys' and their Mums wold fret about them while their dads said "Leave her alone, she's only a kid!" Then there were the boys who didn't like rough games, but would play with their sisters and their dolls for hours - these were the 'sissies' and their Dads grumbled about them while their mothers cooed over how well-behaved and kind they were. But in the end the tomboys were still girls and the sissies were still boys and nobody was jumping about asking for assessments, talking about 'social transitioning' or demanding puberty blockers.

OK, I suppose that what I'm trying to say is that issues like that should be left for the person themselves to decide on once they are an adult. You can waffle on about the suicide rates and depression among 'trans' children and teenagers, but when doing so, you should consider the numbers in the wider context of increased rates of both among 'cis' kids and teens. There are, as has been said, "Lies, damned lies and statistics".

However, nothing as simple or old-fashioned as letting the kids experiment and make their own minds up once they've grown up can be tolerated any more. The Thought Police on both sides of the argument could hardly exercise their power and signal their virtue, if people committed the unpardonable sin of being sensible, after all!
