I've said to my family that they're to be honest, not to give me the virtues I never had (kindness, patience, gentleness etc), but to admit that I am (or was) cantankerous, cynical and unwilling to suffer fools gladly. Because I'm perversely proud of my unpleasant character traits! They've stood me in good stead.
