It's tempting to think that if Britain and Germany had put boots on the ground in Ukraine two and a half years ago, it would all have been over in weeks.

However, the continued invertebrate state of European (and indeed US) leadership means that the likes of Putin and Netanyahu can carry on doing as they please. What's the point of all that muscle if you never throw a punch?
