It's observably the case that when the Left talks about economics they do better. Sir Keir led his campaign on economic issues and rebuilding public services, and won by a landslide.

Right-wingers are prospering because of identity politics, but it isn't exactly because people are racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic etc. It's because the progressives have issued long lists of 'oppressed' groups and insisted that everyone who belongs in one or more of them is oppressed and that everyone else is oppressing them.

So then you get, obviously, the so-called oppressors going "WTF? My life isn't exactly a picnic!". You also get successful (and there are many) members of 'oppressed' groups going "That's not me! I'm fine! What are these idiots talking about?" and others going "Sod representation! I need better wages and lower prices!"

Finally, of course, there is another aspect of identity. It's the one that powered Brexit and the one that's making European countries slide to the Right. Altiero Spinelli, along with other architects of the EU, was a European Federalist who wanted to abolish the nation-state in Europe. Those ideas run deep in the structure of the EU.

But people don't want to be Europeans. They want to be Brits, Germans, French, Italians, Spaniards, etc. They are battling for their cultural identities against Eurohomogenisation.
