It's a weird sort of 'progress'. My late father-in-law, when buying an expensive item, would invariably ask "How much off for cash?". At one time this would be worth a discount. but in his later years, he was often told 'nothing', and in some places that they didn't accept cash at all.
Nowadays, the 'Scan and Shop' tills at my local Tesco are all 'Card Only' machines. The assumption being, I suppose, that those au fait with the scan and shop technology are unlikely to use cash. But is that assumption justifiable? Many people on restricted incomes prefer scan and shop because it keeps a running total of your spending (nobody much under 50 seems able to do mental arithmetic any more), and these are the people who are more likely to pay in cash, as banks are not always willing to issue debit cards to those on low incomes, but will give them ATM cards.
