It cuts deeper than that. We perceive nothing wholly or directly. Our sense organs react to stimuli; our brains react to our sense organs; our minds then build contructs based on reaction to what occurs in the brain. By agreement with others via language, we build the construct we call 'reality'. But what 'reality' is is simply a sign of a sign of a sign, not what is actually there, and which our sense organs only react to a part of.
Which is why when a tree falls in the forest with nobody to hear, it does not make a noise. Vibrating air molecules are not a noise, they are vibrating air molecules. The noise only happens when a human ear is stimulated by them, the human brain reacts and the human mind assigns the agreed word (sign) 'noise' to what is felt.
This also explains the different perceptions of the world experienced by the neurodivergent.
So if we don't even perceive the whole of the physical world, how the Hell are we supposed to be able to have any but the roughest idea about what exists and what doesn't? That's why I'm cagey about terms like 'supernatural' -we only have the means to perceive a tiny part of the 'natural', so it's a bit daft to start divvying up what's natural from what isn't!
